It's been nice to see Dana and David back in the gym after their 2-month CrossFit Hiatus. Occasionally there are times when you want to --or have to-- take a break from the gym. Whether it be job related, health related and even emotional. Whatever the reason...what's the hardest part of coming back? What brings you back at all? CrossFit can be done on your own, in a home gym or even at a big-box gym if you can get creative with equipment. What is the benefit of joining a CrossFit gym and working out with a class?

And the reason to join a crossfit gym opposed to a standard gym is the mentality. You know that you have to push yourself, the work outs emphasize that and you see individual results based upon how hard you push. At the same time you have a class where you are competitive with not only those in your class, but those in other classes. This is friendly competition. We push each other because it makes us in turn work harder to keep up. We encourage each other, and even when we give each other grief, it is in a friend way. There is no hate between crossfit members. This sense of cooperation, encouragement and pushing not only yourself, but the others around you is what makes Crossfit a global community. You can drop into any box and the work ethic is the same, these are all people who are trying to better themselves by pushing their individual limits.
You can not and will not find that in any commercial gym.

ReplyDeleteGlad to be back, in an oddly masochistic way. Some might say that Crossfit is like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer, you only do it because it feels so good to stop. As per Big Josh's comments on this link, there is definitely a mental aspect- we all ought to have our heads examined. How can one not hate when Bill & Parajumper Josh stop in the middle of a w.o.d. to add more weight to their bars?
In all seriousness, the "Community" makes the difference- being a part of this with other folks. Add to that the endorphen rush, sense of physical well being, and feeling of accomplishment from pushing through when you want to quit but don't 'cause the guy beside you is still going- those are all very tangible reasons to keep coming back, and it is good to be back.
I have had to re-evaluate what "competition" really entails, and recognize that there are some lifts I can't do without compromising my ability to do other stuff. At the same time, there are more than enough other areas to focus on for improvement- so I'll continue to keep trying.

I totally agree with Josh and David. There is something so much more motivating when you are going to your crossfit class, knowing you'll be working out with your friends and encouraging each other. Rather than going to a big box to workout alone. You will undoubtedly not push yourself as hard or have the encouragement you need to know you can do more.
